Sophie Curcio broke into the top 10 and the Rams received all of their scoring from underclassmen as New Canaan finished seventh in the CIAC Class L girls cross country championship race Friday at Manchester’s Wickham Park.
The Rams, who were fifth at the FCIAC championships a week earlier, scored 159 points in the Class L meet, far outdistancing eighth-place Cheshire’s 244.
EO Smith won the title with 76 points, followed by Guilford (80) and New Milford (83) in the top three. For the FCIAC, Wilton (142) was fourth and Darien (143) was fifth.
All of the CIAC races were held on Friday after being moved ahead one day due to the forecast of stormy weather for Saturday.
Curcio, a junior, had finished 17th in the 4,000-meter FCIAC race, and moved up on the longer, 5,000-meter course used for the Class L race. She finished in 10th place with a time of 20:10.
Sophomore Breanne Shipman also had a strong showing, finishing 26th in 21:14.
Three freshmen followed, as Riley Shipman (21:46) was 36th; Kiera Hynes (22:02) was 43rd; and Abby Cheney (22:04) was 44th. Sophomore Emma Ognibene (22:24) finished 48th.
New Milford freshman Claire Daniels won the race in 18:56, with Guilford senior Meredith Bloss (19:20) in second, and New Milford’s Brooke Morabito (19:29) in third.
